FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Best Rock” Four Trombone Frontline to Take Center Stage at Long’s Park June 14, 2009.

LANCASTER, PA -- On Sunday, June 14, 2009, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation will showcase 2007 Big Easy “Best Rock Band” award winners, Bonerama. The second concert in the 47th annual Long’s Park Summer Music Series will begin at 7:30 pm.

Fortified by a four trombone frontline that’s “the ultimate in brass balls” with “crushing ensemble riffing, human feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls” (Rolling Stone), this Bonerama tears into vintage New Orleans funk, leaving no question from which city these guys hail. In the same set, even the same song, they can evoke this vintage funk, classic rock and free improvisation.

The Boston Herald declared Bonerama a “bonehead’s dream.” The Vail Daily noted that “the sound is fat and wet; sometimes downright lusty.” And Offbeat Magazine observed, “That nerdy kid in the band room with the trombone just might have the last laugh after all.”

There’s nothing traditional about Bonerama’s brass. Even with no trumpets or saxes in sight, they have brass to spare. As cofounder/trombonist Mark Mullins puts it, “We thought we could expand what a New Orleans brass band could do.” Along with his jazz connections, Mullins is Bonerama’s resident rock ‘n roller. He was the one who instigated the offbeat classic rock covers that have become a band tradition.

Mullins and trombonist Craig Klein are both former members of Harry Connick’s band. “Harry sets the bar pretty high,” Mullins explained, and he and Klein were looking to supplement the Connick gig with something a little less structured. They rounded out their trombone frontline with Rick Trolsen and New Orleans native Steve Suter.

Sousaphone player Matt Perrine adds the bassline to Bonerama’s sound and an additional voice to the songwriting. Guitarist Bert Cotton learned his chops at the Berklee College of Music in Boston but came to New Orleans to immerse himself in funk. Bringing one more dimension to Bonerama is drummer Eric Bolivar, who played Latin music in New York before joining Anders Osborne’s band in New Orleans.

Bonerama has three live albums to their credit. Their latest CD, “Bringing It Home,” opens with the high-stepping “Bayou Betty.” This Bonerama original got extra mileage when they were chosen house band for the all-star Comic Relief benefit in 2006.

The Long’s Park Summer Music Series is produced and underwritten by the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation. Thanks to generous sponsors, private donors and proceeds of the Labor Day weekend Long’s Park Art & Craft Festival, admission and parking are free. Long’s Park concertgoers are invited to bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs to the park. A selection of food purveyors will also be in the park, offering a complete meal’s worth of family foods and desserts. Long’s Park is an alcohol-free park.

Long’s Park is conveniently located at 1441 Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster, just off Route 30 across from Park City Center. All performances are held rain or shine, except in the case of dangerously inclement weather.
