Longs
Park Summer Music Series Featuring One of Nashvilles
Most Spiritual Singers July 19, 2009.
LANCASTER, PA -- The 47th annual Longs Park Summer Music Series
continues on July 19, 2009 with double Grammy-winning, country music
and bluegrass powerhouse Kathy Mattea. Called one of
Nashvilles most spiritual singers by USA Today,
Mattea has recorded 17 albums and landed more than 30 singles on
the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts. Her
impassioned, soulful sounds will fill the park at 7:30 pm.
Across her 25-year career, Matteas ability to move audiences
with her ardent sound has garnered her two Grammys and countless
other accolades. She is a repeat winner of the Country Music Associations
Female Vocalist of the Year and an Academy of Country Musics
Top Female Vocalist. Plus, she has several Single of the Year
and Song of the Year titles to her credit from both
organizations. She has also received two Nashville Music Awards.
The West Virginia native has come a long way since discovering her
love of singing at Girl Scout camp. What started as a passion for
Mattea blossomed into her lifework. She joined the bluegrass band
Pennsboro during her college years and left for Nashville
two years later to pursue her music. Starting as a backup vocalist,
she signed her first solo record deal in 1983 and has been recording
and performing ever since.
A supporter of many social causes throughout her career, Mattea
has been heavily involved with HIV/AIDS-related charities and is
an active and dedicated environmentalist who frequently speaks on
behalf of the Climate Project program organized by former Vice President
Al Gore. Taking her passion for the environment one step further,
Mattea recently joined Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris and Big
Kenny Alphin to form Music Saves Mountains, a nonprofit organization
committed to ending mountaintop removal coal mining. Mattea also
drew on this passion in recording her newest, Grammy-nominated album
Coal, a deep, heartfelt tribute to the earth.
Sponsor Lancaster General will be treating Longs Park concertgoers
